Pruning 'annabelle' hydrangea

Advice for October in the Netherlands

'Annabelle' flowers on the current year's shoots. Spring pruning can therefore be firmer than for bigleaf hydrangea, but choose a height that retains a sturdy framework.

Leave main pruning until late winter or early spring. Spent flowerheads can remain. If you only want to remove an unattractive head, limit the cut to that flower; this does not call for shortening all stems.

Pay attention to this

  • Confirm Hydrangea arborescens, not bigleaf hydrangea.
  • Keep sturdy stems with healthy buds; cutting low is optional.
  • Postpone during hard frost and avoid damaging new shoots at the base.

Frequently asked questions

Must Annabelle be cut very low every year?
No. Less severe pruning that retains woody support can be useful. Choose the height deliberately rather than automatically cutting everything to ground level.
Does this apply to my blue hydrangea?
Not automatically. Bigleaf hydrangea forms most flower buds on older wood and needs different treatment.
Why leave faded flowerheads?
They can provide autumn and winter interest. Removing them is optional, not a necessary trigger for new flowers.
