Wait a little longer
Outside May and June it is better not to prune a rhododendron. Soon after flowering the plant sets next year's buds, so later shaping costs flowers straight away. Leave the shrub for now and plan a light correction after the next flowering.
Pay attention to this
- Wait until after flowering, in May or June.
- Biggest mistake: shaping late in summer, in autumn or in winter and removing the new flower buds.
- Hard renovation depends on species and situation, so we do not give it as general advice.
- Always allow for frost and for differences between species and positions: postpone pruning during prolonged frost or when night frost is forecast.
